Upon emigrating to the United States in the 1970s, the current owner of Philly Pizza, Peter, lived in New York City for some time and fell in love with the pizza. Pizza was America to Peter and he wanted to participate in that rich tradition by making a delicious, American pie to share with people. Despite his fascination with American cuisine, he knew nothing about running a restaurant, so he had to start small.
For a decade, Peter—staying true to his cultural roots—ran a small Mediterranean restaurant in Montebello, California with his wife Rita. His opportunity to achieve his dream came when he saw an ad in a local paper about a tiny, hole-in-the-wall restaurant in West L.A. listed for sale. The name was Philly Pizza & Grill. Where the previous owner saw a lost cause, Peter saw opportunity, and he seized it.
In January of 1995, Philly Pizza & Grill re-opened. Built on the pillars of the family business model and the Mom-n-Pop shop ethic, Philly Pizza & Grill became a neighborhood staple. Peter brought with him the passion and knowledge he had garnered during his time in the East Coast. He introduced fresh, new ingredients to the menu and the rest was history. His dream was realized.
Our pizza sauce is a family recipe, made in-house daily with our own blend of herbs and spices.
Our dough is made from scratch everyday, never from a box, never frozen.
Our mozzarella cheese is finely grated in-house each day from large blocks.
We use a traditional Bakers Pride oven to bake our delicious pizzas.
Our ovens are set at a temperature between 450 and 500 degrees Fahrenheit.
The flames slowly heat the thick slabs of stone to give our pizzas a perfect and tasty finish on the crust. Stone ovens are excellent for pizza baking because they allow for the interior of the dough to bake slowly, while giving the pizza crust a nice, subtle crunch.
